Smart EV Background

As a synonym for a tiny city car, Smart caused quite a sensation when it was first released in the mid-90s. It was a product of an unusual joint venture between Mercedes and Swatch, and their idea proved very successful. However, not a lot of people know that Smart was one of the first EV city cars when the company released Smart ED in 2007. Although it was a limited-run model, it showed the potential, and in 2009, a full-scale production of Smart ED commenced. The battery pack was small but ideal for Smart's tiny dimensions. Since then, Smart has always had a battery-powered model in the portfolio, making this company a true pioneer of the EV revolution. Today, Smart has a brand-new lineup of EV models, which shows ambition and dedication to the idea. We at Voldt closely follow the evolution of zero-emission Smart models, developing the best charging cables for those cars.

Smart EV Models

The legendary Smart ED and EQ Four models are out of production, although they can still be seen on the busy streets of European cities. However, their success and popularity paved the way for the next generation of Smart models. The company is now wholly an EV manufacturer with two models on sale – Smart #1 and Smart #3. Gone are the two-door and two-seater models of the past; new Smart models are both four-door but still have very compact dimensions. The #1 is a small hatchback, and the #3 is a small crossover. The company realized that producing a two-seater limited the model's appeal, so they decided to make a four-seater model, attracting a far larger number of potential customers. Of course, small dimensions and ample practicality are still the brand's most cherished characteristics.

Smart EV Technology

Smart #1 and #3 are built on the same platform with the same 66 kWh battery pack. This lithium-ion battery has a 400 v architecture and supports AC and DC charging. Interestingly, with a 22 kW rate on an AC charger and 150 kW on DC, it is clearly designed to be quickly charged in public places or on home chargers, making the Smart an even more sensible option for urban transport. However, that is where similarities end. The Smart #1 is designed to be a more practical and slower model with a rear-mounted electric motor, and decent but quick acceleration figures. The Smart #3 uses dual motors technology, delivers more power, and can outrun some sports cars. We at Voldt have designed our charging cables to comply with specific Smart EV technology for best performance and maximum usability in any conditions.
